PLEASE READ BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INTALL!
- Airfoil is now fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). Airfoil now uses Instant Hijack 2.2 to capture audio from already-running applications. The Soundflower Extra, used to power System Audio capture, has been updated to version 1.5.1. Software update check now sends the processor architecture to the server.
- With the release of El Capitan, it has become necessary to upgrade Soundflower for users of iShowU and iShowU HD/HD Pro. Note: This is not necessary for users of iShowU Studio, since Studio has it's own driver which already meets the new requirements. The new driver is bundled with both.
- Works great in Yosemite. Please update Sound Flower for El Capitan. Sound Flower worked beautifully on my Mac Book Pro with Yosemite OSX. When I updated to El Capitan it will not work. I would not have updated had I known this.
Note that the even though this Soundflower extension is signed, but the installer is not! You will have to hold the control key down to open the Soundflower.pkg installer for the first time.
Apple makes you jump through a few hoops. The first time you run the installer (Soundflower.pkg), it will ask for your admin password, and will FAIL! A security alert will appear, with a button to take you to System Preferences 'Security & Privacy - General' pane. Once there, there should be an 'Allow' button (**) that you will need to click on to give permission to use Soundflower (developer: MATT INGALLS). Then, RUN THE INSTALLER AGAIN. It should inform you installation was successful. If the 'Allow' button is disabled, you may need to click the lock icon in the bottom lower left corner first.
Same issue here although in Yosemite with AU Lab 2.3 and Soundflower 1.6.7. I run audio to an aggregate device consisting of the built-in output optical to a receiver and a USB audio DAC to a second subwoofer. Using just soundflower is clean but going through AU Lab gives me all kinds of crackling. Nov 20, 2018 Welcome to our Soundflower installation guide. Installing Soundflower on modern macOS versions can be a little complicated as kernel extensions need now to be given permissions before being loaded for the first time. So the Soundflower installer will error out on macOS High Sierra and Mojave. But this is easy to fix.
(**) If you see an 'Open Anyway' button in the Security Preferences, this is something different!!! Most likely because you tried (and failed) opening the installer by double clicking without holding down the control key. If so, click the 'Open Anyway' button which will display another window. Then click the 'Open' button in that window to launch the installer. Now you can follow the instructions above to get the 'Allow' button to appear in the Security Preferences.
NOTE: This is only the Soundflower kernel extension. The SoundflowerBed app is retired. A new replacement is in the works. In the meantime, you can take your chances with an older version of Soundflowerbed, but you can do a lot with a Multi-Output Aggregate Device. Here's an example:
Say i want to play some audio in iTunes, but record it in Quicktime while listening to it out of the built-in speakers. Here is how i would set it up:
*in iTunes:
start playing audio
Open Audio MIDI Setup: (found in /Applications/Utilities)
hit the '+' button in the bottom left corner and select 'Create Multi Output Device'
in the the panel that appears on the right, select 'Built-in Output' AND 'Soundflower (2ch)'
then hit the button with the gear icon bottom left and select 'use this device for sound output' (you should still be hearing your iTunes output -- it is now going to both Soundflower and the built-in speakers)
Then In Quicktime:
create a new audio recording
in the popup menu next to record button select 'Soundflower (2ch)' as the input
(you should now see record levels changing)
hit record!

macOS 10.13 High Sierra and macOS 10.14 Mojave Soundflower Install
- Download the installer: soundflower_2.0b2.zip.
- Run it and perform the install
- The installer will tell you that it failed. This is completely normal.
- Open the System Preferences and go to the “Security & Privacy” settings.
- Click on the “Allow” button next to “MATT INGALS”.(This has to be a physical hardware click. Remote desktop connections or even local software tools like “Better Touch Tool” won’t work!)
- Run the installer again. This time it will run through without any problems.
Click 'Open Security Preferences'
Click on the Allow button and run the installer again.
IMPORTANT: If you can’t record from Soundflower under Mojave (the device is there but only silence is being recorded) make sure that you have given microphone access permissions to your recording app! macOS treats Soundflower like a microphone in this regard. Go to system preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Privacy -> Microphone -> [check mark next to your recording app]

macOS 10.10 - 10.12 Soundflower Install
Because we’re getting this asked a lot: Here’s how you get Soundflower to work with macOS 10.12 Sierra and OS X 10.10 and 10.11…
As you know, since 10.10, OS X requires kernel extensions to be signed. Sadly the officially available version of Soundflower isn’t signed because it’s an open source project and - as far as we know - no one has volunteered to do the work and pay the $99 fee to obtain a signing certificate.
That’s why we have built a signed version of Soundflower which will work on OS X 10.10, 10.11 and the new macOS 10.12 Sierra.
Here is the direct download link: soundflower_2.0b2.zip.
Download the zip and run the contained installer. Even though not required you probably should restart your Mac to make sure everything got installed properly.
Soundflower Mac Yosemite 10.10
Enjoy!

Please note that we can’t offer direct support for Soundflower. We just built a version you can install on macOS 10.11 and 10.12. If you encounter any problems please contact Soundflower’s developer! You can find their project page here: https://github.com/Soundflower-Original
Soundflower Mac Review
Shameless self promotion: Have you tried Vector yet? Vector is an audio editor for OS X that is designed to fit into the space between simple audio apps and full blown studio production tools. (Kinda like Cool Edit Pro for the Mac - if you are that old school).
